Alexandria

Alexandria, Virginia

Alexandria was settled by John Carlyle, John Dalton and William Ramsay, naming it Belhaven in 1749. Belhaven was renamed Alexandria in May of 1749 after the Alexanders who owned the land. General Braddock and several thousand British soldiers camped in and around Alexandria during the French and Indian War. Strategy for the war was discussed at the Carlyle House.
