HISTORICAL SITE DETAILS

Fort Halifax

Winslow, Maine

Fort Halifax was built in 1754. The blockhouse was the oldest blockhouse in the U.S. before a flood destroyed it in 1987. Fort Halifax was built in a strategic location on the Kennebec River in order to protect English settlements along the river. It was abandoned after 1762 and reoccupied by the colonists in 1775. Today, the site is located one mile south of the Winslow-Waterville bridge on US Route 201.
